A presentation by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Dept and Dr David Hopkins of the Jersey Diabetes Service to be held at St Paul’s Centre at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 1 October.

On Saturday 5 October, amendments to the legislation regarding the issuing and holding of Jersey driving licences comes into effect. In particular, these amendments will relate in part to those individuals with diabetes who are insulin dependent, have impaired vision or a physical disability which would affect their ability to drive.

To ensure that everyone who is likely to be affected is aware of the changes, Diabetes Jersey is hosting a presentation by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Department and Dr David Hopkins of the Jersey Diabetes Service. This presentation, at St Paul’s Centre on Tuesday 1 October at 6.30pm, is for the benefit of drivers and those who will qualify to hold a driving licence in the coming years who are insulin dependent, together with other interested parties.

Details of these changes to the Law are posted on the charity’s website and social media pages and by attending the presentation those drivers affected by these changes will be provided with the opportunity to resolve any issues that they may still have.

If you wish to attend the meeting, you will benefit beforehand from reading the documents on the website which have been provided by the DVS Dept. There is every likelihood that having read these documents, there will still be queries for which you would like clarification at the meeting.

Every day in Jersey statistically one more person will be diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is a condition whose specific causes are still unknown and for which, yet no cure has been discovered. 

On Saturday 15 June, Diabetes Jersey has organised what is likely to be the most important event to date for increasing our knowledge of the condition with keynote speakers from the United Kingdom who are specialists in their various fields. 

This day-long conference will be of great benefit to the medical fraternity, politicians (since diabetes imposes very significant costs on society), everyone with the condition (both Type 1 and Type 2) and members of the public any one of whom might join that inevitable march of statistics. The morning sessions of the Conference, commencing at 9.00 am, will be opened by Health Minister Deputy Tom Binet and the afternoon sessions at 2.00 pm by Dr Karen Kyd who, as an active GP, became specialist in the condition. 

The speakers will be led by Dr David Hopkins, Consultant for the Diabetes Service in Jersey, Dr Piya Sen Gupta will speak on the subject of ‘Prevention and Reversal of  Type 2 Diabetes’, Professor David Strain who will speak on the subject of ‘Diabetes and Ageing’, Professor Khalida Ismail who will present on the subject of ‘Diabetes and the Mind – the Interplay between the Condition and Mental Health’ and Professor Mark Evans who will speak on the subject of ‘Living with Type 1 diabetes – New technology and future developments’. 

“Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Dr Hopkins and the sponsorship of MySugarWatch, Diabetes Jersey has been able to organise a conference that will greatly enhance our knowledge of the condition,” says Bill O’Brien, chairman of Diabetes Jersey. “In Jersey there are at least 4,500 people with diabetes and possibly a further 1,500 or so who might already have the condition and be unaware or will become diabetic in the near future.  A key role of the charity is to create public awareness of a condition which, if not managed, can ultimately be fatal.  We are very grateful to our assembled team of visiting specialists and our main sponsor MySugarWatch. THE SPEAKERS

DR DAVID HOPKINS

Prior to taking up his post as a Consultant for the Diabetes Service in Jersey, Dr Hopkins was employed by Kings College, London, and was joint Clinical Academic Lead across Kings’ Health Partners.  He has held a number of national roles, including that of being a member of the Diabetes UK Council of Health Professionals and pf the DAFNE Executive which provides education courses for those with Type 1 diabetes. He has broad research interests including the areas of hypoglycaemia and coronary artery disease in Type 2 diabetes. 

Dr Hopkins will give an overview of the Diabetes Service in Jersey and speak on Diabetes Complications.

DR PIYA SEN GUPTA

Dr Sen Gupta was appointed as a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust in 2018. She manages patients with diabetes, endocrine conditions, and obesity. Her special interests, apart from the areas she treats, include lifestyle medicine and therapeutics, diabetes complications and quality improvement in healthcare and data analytics.

Dr Sen Gupta will speak on the subject of ‘Prevention and Reversal of  Type 2 Diabetes’.

PROFESSOR DAVID STRAIN

Professor David Strain is an Associate Professor of Cardiometabolic Health at the University of Exeter Medical School. Clinically, he runs a community diabetes service for the older adult and specialises in this area in his research. He also has an expertise in exploring the mechanism that some medications give benefits to people with diabetes beyond their effect on sugar and blood pressure. As a result of his research, he has presented his work in more than 110 countries.

Professor Strain will speak on the subject of ‘Diabetes and Ageing’.

PROFESSOR KHALIDA ISMAIL

Professor Khalida Ismail is a Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine with a particular research interest in diabetes. This includes the link between diabetes and depression, together with the development and evaluation of Interventions to improve diabetes control and depression. She currently holds positions with Kings College, London.

Professor Ismail will speak on the subject of ‘Diabetes and the Mind – the Interplay between the Condition and Mental Health’.

PROFESSOR MARK EVANS

Professor Mark Evans is a Consultant Physician working in diabetes and general medicine in Cambridge University Hospitals (Addenbrookes) and a Clinical Scientist based in the University of Cambridge Wellcome-MRC Institute od Metabolic Science. His interests include hypoglycaemia, Type 1 diabetes, immunotherapy, medical technology, and structured education for diabetes.

Professor Evans will speak on the subject of ‘Living with Type 1 diabetes – New technology and future developments’.

WILLIAM O’BRIEN

William (Bill) O’Brien is chairman of Diabetes Jersey, a charity established in Jersey in 2004 having formerly been the Jersey branch of the then British Diabetes Association. Bill is a retired senior Jersey police officer and has Type 2 diabetes. The role of the charity is to raise funds to support those in the Island with the condition which has often involved funding specialist positions in the Jersey Diabetes Service and the provision of specialised equipment to the Health and Community Service Department. Its other key role is to raise awareness in the public in general of diabetes and how the risk of acquiring Type 2 diabetes can be diminished. 

Bill O’Brien will open the conference on behalf of the charity in Jersey.
