Kirsty Moseley is going to complete 5k a day for a year to raise money for Diabetes Jersey to help raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes.

I am going to start this challenge on National Diabetes Day 14th November 2020 and complete it on the 14th November 2021.

Our story

On the 16th of March 2016, our son Rhys was taken to hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, five days before his 3rd Birthday. This was a complete shock to our family and has been a huge learning curve.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. It is not preventable and its cause is unknown.

Our lives now consist of measuring every thing Rhys eats, carb counting, monitoring blood glucose levels, working out how much insulin to give for each meal, changing pumps and his Dexcom every three to ten days. Whilst it is tough, . Rhys keeps us all going as he continues to have a smile on his face every day and has shown so much resilience, he truly is such an inspirational young boy.

We have been so lucky as we have received new equipment and technology to support Rhys’ diagnosis as and when it has become available. We have moved from finger pricking 20+ times a day, to a Libre which you swipe to check levels to now a Dexcom that syncs with our phones. We have also gone from 10 plus injections a day to now have a Omnipod pump which delivers his insulin, we change this pod every 3 days. These developments have been life changing for Rhys and our family but they also bring with them new anxieties. This wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for all of the work Diabetes Jersey do on a daily basis.

Unfortunately not all children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes are offered these opportunities and equipment and more funding would support the charity in reaching more families.

We have been provided with so much support from the Diabetes doctors and Nurses and Diabetes Jersey from day one of Rhys’ diagnosis and can’t thank them enough.

Diabetes Jersey works tirelessly to support people with diabetes, and to raise public awareness of the need for testing.

Swirl and Twirl fundraising event for Diabetes Jersey

SWIRL & TWIRL FUNDRAISING EVENT FOR DIABETES JERSEY

This coming weekend, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November using her ‘Swirl and Twirl Ice Cream Van at Les Platon Trinity, Natalie Coutanche and Emma Jane Griffiths will be fundraising for Diabetes Jersey. A specially created ice cream will be available for sale with part of the proceeds being donated to the charity.

Please support both Natalie, Emma and Diabetes Jersey by paying a visit. Her friend and co-creator Jonny Labey said “In light of all events being written off and the importance of supporting our local charities as well as independant businesses, for this year’s #worlddiabetesday I’m teaming up with Swirl N’ Twirl and their delicious ice creams to bring you SUGAR TAX!

I’m an absolute fiend for Ice Creams, that and liquorice are my only two things that I wish were outside of the limits as to what a Type 1 has to consider.

This year I was meant to be hosting my second comeback to the Opera House hosting a solo concert to raise money for the incredible Diabetes Jersey, a charity that saw me through my diagnosis on the island. Due to lockdown 2 as well as all the event cancellations we thought we’d do a fun, tasty treat to brighten up your day and raise awareness/funds.

Go see the girls at Les Platons Carpark, all weekend, grab a bowl, a cuppa, a Jersey Wonder and make a difference with a smile on your face”!

Diabetes Ancillaries Survey

Diabetes Jersey is supporting two surveys, one relating to a review of the Ancillaries Service being conducted by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Jersey Branch and the other, being undertaken by the Diabetes Service.

You will find within this article, information on how to complete the Ancillaries Review and for those preferring to respond in writing, contact details are provided.

Islanders who have diabetes, whether or not a member of the charity, will shortly receive a written communication from Health and Community Services which seeks to receive feedback on its services provided during the pandemic.

Diabetes Jersey asks that all Islanders with diabetes, including the parents of children with the condition, to use these opportunities to provide honest and constructive feedback to both surveys, as this can only improve the services currently offered.

Fill the Grants Whisky Bottle with the chance of winning some of the proceeds

The charity is attempting to fill this bottle, which stands 50cms (20 inches) tall with donations of any silver, £1 and £2 coins, together with banknotes to use in a fundraising competition next year. Donations will be accepted up to February, when the bottle with its contents will be sealed in readiness for a competition.

The Future of Diabetes Care in Jersey

As most of you who have diabetes will be aware, the charity has been engaged with both the Minister For Health & Community Services (HCS), his Director General and her senior officers since November, to bring about much needed improvement to the services and support currently provided within secondary care. The various meetings held have been both open and transparent, evidenced now by the fact that a Business Case has been submitted by HCS for the additional funding required to bring the service to the level it should rightly be.

At this time, the charity is not in a position to provide detail on the Business Plan, but hopes to be able to share it with you in the coming weeks.

Whilst the charity awaits Government approval for this additional funding to be approved, there is much work to be undertaken. One such area is the provision of our support to HCS in their undertaking of a patient questionnaire to assist in the future provision of services. I therefore ask that you not only read the following message from HCS, but fully engage in the provision of honest feedback in due course.

Update from Health and Community Services (HCS)

Our doctors and nurses have seen first-hand the enormous strain this pandemic has put everyone under. It has been a worrying, frustrating and difficult time for us all and we understand how acutely this has been felt by those with Diabetes. As you know, we have continued to see emergency patients and arranged telephone consultations, but due to Government guidelines we had to stop face-to-face appointments at the Diabetes Centre. We are incredibly pleased to be able to provide these appointments once more.

Throughout this pandemic, Diabetes Jersey and HCS have continued to work together on all aspects of the Diabetes pathway. A Task & Finish group was set up at the beginning of the year which has informed a business case, submitted to the Government of Jersey for consideration as part of the 2021 plan, for additional funding, with the areas of immediate concern being:

improvements to the retinal screening programme

workforce capacity

structured education

access to funded technology

psychological support

Thank you to those of you who have inputted into shaping the present and future of care offered to people with Diabetes in Jersey.

Alongside these plans, in September we will be seeking patient feedback concerning the challenges around access to the Centre during this pandemic, as well as reviewing the contingency plans we put in place. This will help the service understand how best to continue to support our clients and deliver our care going forward. As part of the journey, we will also run sessions in October with all stakeholders to review the Diabetes Strategy for the island before it is put forward to the Council of Ministers.

The support we have had from Diabetes Jersey is invaluable and we have established a relationship based on trust, integrity and honesty. They continue to be an important partner and we look forward to working with them, and you, on the next phase of improved Diabetes care in Jersey.
