If you are over 45, overweight, unfit and have a history of diabetes in your family, you may be at risk of this chronic disease. It can be controlled if detected early.
In conjunction with the Channel Islands Co-Operative, Diabetes Jersey has arranged for Type 2 Diabetes tests to be available for a low cost price of £5 from Monday 18 February, at the following branches:
Monday to Friday - 9am - 5pm
Pharmacy Locale, Grand Marché - St Helier
Pharmacy Locale, Grand Marché - St Peter
Co-op Medical Care - Bath Street
Co-op Medical Care - New Era
The Diabetes Type 2 testing service is available to anyone aged 18 years or over. The test takes 5 –10 minutes and will take place in a private pharmacy consultation room by a trained member of staff. No appointment is necessary. You will be asked to fill out a one page form with your details and then be asked several questions to help determine whether you are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, including:
This information will help to determine if you are at low, increased, moderate or high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. If you are at moderate or high risk, your blood sugar level will be checked, by taking a very small finger-prick sample of blood.
The blood sugar results are available immediately, and depending on the results you may be asked to come back for further assessment. This will include a fasting blood sugar test, which involves a finger-prick sample of blood when you have an empty stomach (usually first thing in the morning before you have breakfast).
You may be provided with lifestyle advice and ways to reduce your chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes. If needed, you may be referred to your doctor following the testing service.
Tests will also be available, as usual, from GPs and pharmacies.
